Arthritis in the Joints…

Arthritis in the Joints can lead to joint weakness and physical deformities that can interfere with even the most basic daily activities. Arthritis pain varies considerably in severity. Arthritis can be experienced as a minor nuisance - or it can be incapacitating. Most physicians agree that some regular exercise is beneficial for osteoarthritis because it keeps muscle tone intact and helps to prevent stiffness in the joints. Arthritis can also flare up in concert with another disease; for example, gout is often linked with arthritis, because the uric acid crystals associated with gout can end up in any joint, not just the big toe.

 

Arthritis can be caused from strains and injuries caused by repetitive motion, sports, overexertion, and falls. Arthritic joints can be sensitive to weather changes. Arthritis can damage your joints, organs, and skin. There are things you can do to keep the damage from getting worse. Arthritis can affect people of all ages, including children. In Illinois in 1990, about 16 percent of the state’s population - nearly 2 million people - suffered from arthritis or other rheumatic conditions.

 

Arthritis can develop as a result of an infection. For example, bacteria that cause gonorrhea or Lyme disease can cause arthritis. Arthritis can affect any part of the body, including the spine.
